Boy, talk about good timing. Peninsula College’s basketball squads need some good mojo heading into tonight’s (Jan. 20) doubleheader against Everett.
P.C. kicked off “Pirate Pete’s Week” (spirit week) Monday with a flurry of activities, and it continues tonight with a performance by the juggling comedy troop Brothers From Different Mothers.
In the opener at 5 p.m., Peninsula’s women are seeking to break a brutal, 11-game losing streak, including a six-game conference slump.
The Pirate women (0-6 in conference, 1-13 overall) showed improvement in the last two games, thanks to the infusion of transfers Brianna DeSantis and Danika Goodwin.
Despite a 12-point loss at Edmonds Monday evening, the Pirates battled all night and out-scored the Tritons 31-28 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Goodwin, a Port Angeles grad who was most recently at Pacific Lutheran, earned a start in just her second game for Peninsula. She scored 10 points and a team-high eight steals. DeSantis added nine rebounds.
Blair Musgrove had one of her best games as a Pirate, scoring 11 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and blocking six shots.
But 26 turnovers, 35 percent shooting and getting out-rebounded 51-41 was too much to overcome against Edmonds.
The Everett women (3-2, 7-7) come into tonight’s game with three wins in their past four games. The Trojans are tied for third place in the NWAACC North division.
P.C. men look to get back on top
On the men’s side, Peninsula was a perfect 4-0 in conference play entering Saturday night’s game at Whatcom in Bellingham, where they lost 74-70 in double overtime.
Two nights later, Peninsula came up short once again by four points, dropping a 71-67 decision at Edmonds.
Sequim High grad Ryan Rutherford had another solid game for P.C., hitting for 16 points, while Jason Gamblin added 15 points.
Edmonds managed to do something few teams have done against the Pirates by controlling the defensive glass. The Tritons out-rebounded Peninsula 43-31.
The Everett men (2-3, 4-9) have lost two of their last three games, falling to Edmonds 85-70 on Monday.
‘Brothers’ set to perform
The Brothers From Different Mothers group perform at halftime of the men’s game (likely 7:20-7:30 p.m. or so) and will also have a post-game performance in the gym at about 8:30 p.m., barring overtime.
The Brothers group has appeared on numerous television shows, including “America’s Got Talent.”
Their comedy repertoire includes stunts like spearing vegetables in mid air, spitting ping-pong balls at volunteers or a machete leap of death. See www.differentmothers.com.
Admission to the game is $6 for adults, $4 for students and free for youths 6 years old and younger. There’s no extra charge for the post-game show.
