Well, the first prep football poll that I can find has the Sequim Wolves ranked eighth in the state — not bad for a team that is still seeking their first state tournament win in the school’s history.

The Tacoma News Tribune, which ranks up there with the Olympian and Spokesman Review for best daily, statewide prep coverage year in and year out, has Sequim in its top 10.

I mention this poll since it’s the first and only preseason one I’ve seen. The Seattle Times does a good job of covering the 3A and 4A rankings but not the smaller classifications.

The Trib has Lynden listed at No. 1, followed by Prosser, Archbishop Murphy, Ellensburg and Tumwater.

Also getting some respect in the “next section,” or the “just missed our top 10 list,” is North Mason.

Notably absent: Steilacoom, the squad that gave Sequim its only loss in 2008, and Eatonville, a team that gave Sequim fits on the road last season.

(Note: Lynden, No. 1, takes on Archbishop Murphy, No. 3, in the Emerald City Classic, both teams’ first game of the season. Nice.)

In the 1A rankings, another of Sequim’s 2009 opponents, Cascade Christian, comes in ranked No. 7. That may seem low for a team that made the championship game last season but the Cougars lost a bunch of players off their squad.

Forks’ Spartans are not ranked. They play No. 1-ranked Montesano on Oct. 16, week seven.

Neah Bay gets noticed in the “next” section in 1B rankings.

Here are the Trib’s top teams by classification. An asterisk (*) denotes defending state champs:

4A — Skyline*

3A — Bellevue*

2A — Lynden*

1A — Montesano

2B — Colfax

1B — Cusick

My Central Kitsap Cougars, by the way, are ranked No. 6 in the 4A ranks, thank you very much.
