With the culmination of another prep year, it’s time to look at where some former Sequim High School athletes have managed to continue their athletic endeavors.
Out of the 2009 graduating class, we already know Ary Webb has plans to shoot hoops for Olympic College in Bremerton (alma mater of yours truly, class of ’97 or something like that).
Classmate Spencer Middleton said a couple of weeks ago he may try walking on at Olympic, although family members say Middleton has other plans.
Joe Hutchison and Ethan Hinton are headed to Southern Oregon University and will likely wrestle for the NAIA Raiders.
Chad Quinet is sticking with sports but headed toward managing golf courses as he heads to Walla Walla Community College to study turf management.
There are likely a number of other 2009 grads who will wind up on college teams. We’ll keep an eye out for those student-athletes starting in the fall.
This spring saw a number of Sequim grads hitting the fields/track/courts.
Yolanda Chinn dusts the diamonds for Lower Columbia Community College. Chinn finished the season hitting .237 with two doubles, one home run and nine RBIs as a freshman. The Red Devils ranked at or near the top of the conference coaches’ poll all spring, went 2-2 at the NWAACC tournament, ending their string of three consecutive titles. (Teammate Aly Rae, a Port Angeles grad, led the Red Devils with 12 wins and 129 strikeouts.)
Ben Grubb slugs fastballs for Lower Columbia’s highly ranked baseball squad. The red-shirt freshman tied for seventh in the NWAACC with five home runs and finished the season with a team-high .622 slugging percentage, four triples and 15 extra-base hits. He batted .327 in 98 at-bats for the 35-6 squad. The Red Devils’ baseball squad finished the season ranked No. 2 in the conference but lost both games at the season-ending tournament in May. (Teammate Eric Lane of Port Angeles was seventh in the NWAACC with a .408 batting average and 27 RBIs.)
Stephanie Marcy, now a sophomore at Stanford University (Div. I) was named an honorable mention on the Pac-10 All-Academic team as a total of 18 Cardinal women earned all-academic status. Marcy, a middle distance runner, took fourth place in the women’s 10,000-meter run (35:20) at the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on May 17, helping Stanford’s women place second overall behind Oregon. Marcy placed 10th in the women’s 5,000-meter run (16:53) at the NCAA Division I 2009 Outdoor Track & Field West Regional, also in Eugene, on May 29-30.
Kincaid Nichols is a sprinter and jumper at Central Washington University, a Division II school. He won the 100-meter dash (10.95) and placed third in the long jump (21-1.25) at the 2009 Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg on April 18. During the indoor season in January-March, Nichols recorded the team’s third-best marks in the 60- and 200-meter dash times and fourth-best long jump mark.
Cory Parrish runs for the Linfield Wildcats’ Division III track squad. Parrish recorded Linfield’s fourth-best 400-meter dash time (50.85) on April 24 at the NWC Championship meet. He also has the school’s fifth-best 800-meter time of 2:03.91, set March 6 at the Linfield Erik Anderson Icebreaker meet.
Justine Textor and the University of Idaho (Div. I) recently completed a strong spring tennis season, as the Vandals topped their 2008 win total with 20 victories. Textor, who placed third at the class 2A tourney on Sequim’s state champion 2007 tennis team, is a sophomore at Idaho.
Chad Wagner pitches for the Sea Warriors at Hawaii-Pacific University’s baseball squad (Div. II). Wagner, a junior, finished the 2009 spring season with a 3-6 record and 7.77 earned-run average, striking out 25 batters in 10 starts. Wagner transferred from Lower Columbia where he was first team All-NWAACC and twice named first team All-West Region.
