I did this number comparison two years ago, when Sequim High and other peninsula prep teams got shuffled back into the newest version of the Olympic League. Time to update.
The idea is to contrast how Sequim High sports fare against 2A and 3A league foes during this 2008-2009 sports season — including fall, winter and spring sports — such as, Sequim versus Port Angeles in football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, etc.
Two years ago, Sequim showed that they could dominate 2A foes Klahowya (a .841 winning percentage against the Eagles), Port Townsend (.800 against the then 2A school) and North Mason (.738).
Surprisingly, the Wolves held their own against 3A schools Bremerton (a .735 winning percentage against the Knights) and Port Angeles (.527), while struggling against Peninsula High School of Gig Harbor (.309) and, most severely against Olympic (.236).
Two years later, the league has changed. Peninsula is out of the 3A ranks but replaced by North Kitsap. Kingston is in as a 2A school while Port Townsend has dropped to 1A, staying in the Olympic League for sports all but football. I’ve included them here for the sake of posterity. Or the sake of filling up the web with more numbers.
As you find below, Sequim’s Wolves win better than 60 percent of its contests with other 2A schools and 80 percent of their games against 1A Port Townsend. The 3A is a mix: Sequim has success against Bremerton but struggles against the tougher North Kitsap and (in particular) against the Olympic Trojans of Silverdale.
Most interesting is the cross-peninsula battle between Sequim and Port Angles. With the Wolves winning at a 52.6-percent clip it’s by far the most competitive league match-up. That percentage is one-one hundredth of a percent off of the 2007 comparison. To sum up, it’s a great rivalry for both schools.
Note: these results include only varsity teams. The records include non-league games, league matches/duals, league championships and districts. Left out of these results are some district and state competitions along with tournaments and invitationals, particularly those for individual sports. Why? These sometimes feature only select athletes and don’t seem like a true showing of a full team vs. team competition.
All of this is mostly unscientific, but hey, what in sports is truly scientific?
