Officials from the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center must be breathing a sigh of relief today.

More than 67 percent of Port Angeles residents’ ballots counted Tuesday approve a measure to set up a metropolitan park district that would levy a property tax to run the William Shore Pool, radio station KONP is reporting today.

Officials counted 9,611 ballots on Tuesday. Yes votes outnumbered no votes 6,484 to 3,125.

Through Tuesday, just half of the ballots had been returned to the Clallam County auditor's office.

About 19,000 ballots were sent out on April 29 to voters living in the Port Angeles School District boundaries.

Tallies received at the courthouse on Tuesday and those mailed in with a Tuesday postmark are to be counted at a later dates, the radio station reported.

If the pool had closed, it would have left the Sequim Aquatic Center as the only remaining pool on the North Olympic Peninsula west of Port Townsend.

Forks’ pool remains closed because of a dearth of funding. Port Townsend’s pool remains open despite struggles to keep its doors open as well.
