What:  10th Annual Alumni Jamboree
Where:  Rick Kaps Gymnasium
When:  Saturday, November 28th
Fee:  $30 (Please make Checks payable to:  Sequim Youth Basketball)
Who:  Former Wolfpack players

Gentlemen,

We’re going to try a few changes this year.  Since we don’t seem to be getting as many “young” guys back as we do the “seasoned veterans” we’re going to change the format slightly so some of you won’t be gassed by the time the evening session rolls around.

In the morning I’ll be over getting started with registrations/evaluations for our Sequim Youth Basketball Program (the new millennium’s Gym Rats) from 8:30 – 11:00 am.  If you’d like to drop by and check it out or are willing to help herd kids we’ve love to see you.  SYB now involves over 300 kids a year with 30+ teams in grades 1-6.

During the day we’ll open the gym from about noon to two, choose up squads and play until we’re tired.  This will be followed by the Varsity Jamboree in the evening.  However, this year (depending on numbers of high school players), we may also play the JV’s with a group as well as the varsity.  We may also play alums vs. alums in the evening just so the massive crowd can see how far you’ve come in the time you have been gone.

The tourney staff (Art and I) will select a couple of teams to play in the evening event.

Plan to be at the gym by 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28th if you plan to participate in the alumni tourney.

IT IS A TREMENDOUS HELP TO ART AND I IF YOU WILL REGISTER AND SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY FEES BY NOV. 25th. Even if you make a last minute decision to play, PLEASE CONTACT us so we’ll know you are coming. We are thinking about getting reversible jerseys for you to wear this year instead of t-shirts, but at this writing we’re sill waiting on the price and ability to get them here by jamboree time.  If you want to purchase one to keep, it will probably be a few extra $.

As always your participation in the jamboree would be great, but if you can’t make it (or are so woefully out of shape that you shouldn’t) we hope you’ll at least come by to visit or send a few $ in anyway. Of course, if you want to both play and contribute I guess we could live with that too. Your fees for the jamboree and any donations to Sequim Youth Basketball are tax deductible and help defray the major costs involved in continuing to operate a quality basketball program here at Sequim that has helped the Wolfpack earn State AA tourney berths 2 of the past 3 years.

In addition to the tournament/jamboree, the annual Rick Kaps Scholarship Scramble is planned for Friday, Nov. 27th at former Wolf Jeff Pedersen’s Sky Ridge Golf Course.  It will be a 4-person scramble with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. There will be 3 divisions and the entry fee is $220 per team, $55 for individual player. Proceeds from the tournament go directly into the Rick Kaps Memorial Scholarship fund which I am honored to present annually at the SHS Scholarship Night.  One of the winners two years ago was this cute girl named Jaysa Hill.  THANK YOU GOLFERS—COLLEGE IS EXPENSIVE. Contact Art, Jeff, or myself directly if you plan to participate in that event as well or if you would like to donate to the fund.

The support former players and fans (Bob Campbell slips me a little cash for the kids every year—more if we’re winning!!) have given us over the years has helped make the annual tournament a success and your contributions are truly appreciated.  For me personally, this is always a high point of my year and I look forward to seeing all of you.

I can’t help but feel a little helpless this March. You see, as of early Tuesday afternoon, my NCAA March Madness brackets remain empty.

Edgar Martinez, in his first year of eligibility, didn’t make it into the Hall of Fame. No, it’s not a travesty, but it’s not right either, and hopefully sports writers will get a brain some day and put the guy in.

Best SHS game ever? — revisited
Tue, Jan 5, 2010

For those of you keeping up with the blog, I’ve posted a few times about my favorite Sequim prep games these last 10 years. I was thumbing through the old files for this one, and thought it might be fun to revisit one of SHS’s best football games of all time.

Is the WIAA’s reclassification a good thing for Sequim?
Tue, Dec 29, 2009

Don’t get me wrong: Reclassifying prep teams is, in general, a good thing. But THIS isn’t going to work.
