Kayakers to talk

marine mammals

Richard Osborn, salmon restoration coordinator for Clallam County, is scheduled to speak at the Nov. 11 meeting of the Olympic Peninsula Paddlers.

The 7 p.m. meeting is at Vern Burton Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Osborn is slated to give a presentation about marine mammals that kayakers might encounter while paddling in the Strait of Juan De Fuca and Puget Sound.

Basketball

clinic slated

A YMCA youth basketball skills clinic for boys and girls in grades 1-8 is slated for 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Stevens Middle School, 1139 W. 14th St., Port Angeles.

Cost is $5, payable the day of the camp; non-YMCA players are welcome.

The Peninsula College men and women Pirate basketball players host the annual clinic. Head coaches Peter and Julie Stewart run the clinic.

Participants are urged to bring their own basketball.

Gymnastics club

adds services

Port Angeles-based Klahhane Gymnastics is now a full-service gymnastics club, with preschool and recreational classes for girls and boys ages 18 months through 18 years.

Registration is open for classes that begin Nov. 2 in the new 9,000-square-foot facility at 3318 Acorn Lane.

Klahhane hosts an open house on Sunday, Nov. 1, with facility tours, obstacle courses and registration available. Open house times are 12:30-

2 p.m. for age 18 months-5 years and 2:30-4:40 p.m. for ages 6 and older.

Local soccer stars shine at state 'Challenge'

Port Angeles Soccer was well represented at the Washington Recreation & Park Association's State Soccer Challenge in Kent on Oct. 17-18.

Nine top finishers from the local competition participated against winners from other cities in four different skills.

Vincent Ioffrida and Grayson Peet led the local contingent, taking first and second in the boys' 11-12 division. Ioffrida's 210 points were the most for any of the divisions.

Israel Gonzalez took home second place in the boys' 6-U division, and Kenny Soule scored a third out of 12 in the boys' 9-10 division.

Also competing well but not placing in the top three were Emma Krepps in the girls' 6-U, Michaela Childs in the girls 7-8, Jonathan Scott in the boys' 6-U and Jared Childs and Michael Scott in the boys' 9-10 division.



'Talking Rain' hoops tourney is in P.A.

The Port Angeles Recreation Department hosts the Talking Rain Sparkling Water Tipoff Tourney, Oct. 31-Nov. 1 for men's basketball teams.

The tourney features a four-game guarantee.

Entry fee is $235 per team. Games are in Port Angeles.

Volleyball league set to start in November

Registration is under way for the 2009-2010 Peninsula Volleyball League.

The coed league offers play on Sunday nights at the Peninsula College gymnasium (1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles) for players with intermediate to advanced volleyball skills.

The registration fee of $200 per team is due by Nov. 1.

League play starts Nov. 1 and runs through February.

Touchdown Club to help football program

The Sequim High School's football boosters are asking for public support by way of the Touchdown Club, a program that assists the football program with purchasing new uniforms, helmets and safety equipment.

With four levels of sponsorship - white, black, purple and gold - club organizers ask supporters to donate a dollar amount per touchdown scored this season. White level sponsorship pledges $5 per touchdown; black, $10; purple, $25; and gold, $50.

Donations, made through the Sequim Schools Athletic Booster Club, are tax-deductible (tax ID:91-1885052).

Self-defense classes set for November

Sequim-based Bodystrong TaeKwon-Do, 244 W. Washington St., offers a series of self-defense classes from 6-7 p.m. on four Mondays in November,

Brandon Stoppani, head instructor for Bodystrong TaeKwon-do and a black belt 5th dan in taekwon-do, leads the class. He has 30 years of self-defense experience.

Class topics include: Nov. 2, release from grabs; Nov. 9, revised release from grabs and basic offensive techniques; Nov. 16, basic offensive techniques; and Nov. 23, revise offensive techniques and combining defensive and offensive techniques.

Horse clinic set in P.T.

The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Project hosts a clinic with Dr. Richard Vetter, a veterinary equine dentist, on Nov. 7-8 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend.

Vetter is scheduled to exam and treat horses. He has been trained in advanced equine dental care and is tested and accredited by the International Association of Dentistry.

Adult basketball league forms

An adult basketball league is scheduled to start Nov. 2 with games Monday-Thursday.

Games are at Roosevelt Elementary School in Port Angeles.

Coaches for new teams can pick up a registration packet at the recreation office, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Players who do not have a team on which to play can put their names on the "free agent" list by calling 417-4550.
