Tryouts and practices for Sequim High School football start at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the high school practice fields, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Players need a completed physical form.

First prep cross country practice set

Sequim High School cross country's first practice of the 2009 season is set for 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at Railroad Bridge Park in Sequim.

Athletes are asked to bring their medical history and physical forms.

The first practice is scheduled to last 90 minutes. Subsequent practice dates are to be given out during the first practice.

For more information, call 683-3360.

Team members host a car wash from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Chase Bank, formerly Washington Mutual Bank, 680 W. Washington St.

The event raises funds for traveling to a competition in Seaside, Ore., later this year.

For more information, call 683-7944.

Hydros go on hiatus

The Unlimited Light Hydroplane Racing Association and Peninsula Water Sports Association recently agreed to postpone the Strait Thunder hydroplane races scheduled for Sept. 26-27 until the 2010 season.

"The depressed economy has taken its toll on event sponsorships across the country and Port Angeles has been no exception," the groups' officials said in a press release.

"Some of the festivals' major supporters have recently had to reprioritize their discretionary spending during the deepest economic downturn in a century. A lack of support at the local level from both sponsorships and volunteers who help conduct the event contributed to today's decision."

This fall would have been the seventh-annual running of Strait Thunder and hydroplane championships. In some cases, corporate supporters have expressed a hope to bring the event back to the Port Angeles harbor next year, according to the press release.

See future editions of

the Sequim Gazette for more details.
