'Knights' golf tourney scheduled
The Bob Taylor, Knights of Columbus Memorial Golf Tournament is slated for a noon start on Saturday, Aug. 1, at SunLand Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive.
Proceeds go to local community charities including St. Vincent De Paul and Queen of Angels School.
The tourney is a two-person best-ball event with Calloway and handicap divisions.
Cost is $25 for SunLand members, $55 for nonmembers; price includes green fees and awards. Field is limited to 100 golfers (50 teams).
Power carts are available for $27.

free circuit training
The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center is offering a free circuit room orientation this summer at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 27.
Preregistration is required; maximum enrollment is six.
Participants must be at least 16 years old and may register by calling SARC at 683-3344, x16.
Crab, Crabette
tournament set
The 36th annual Crab & Crabette Mixed Chapman golf tournament is scheduled for Aug. 8-9 at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road.
Entry fee is $260 per couple.
The tourney features prizes totaling more than $3,500 (based on a full 80-team field).
The format is a 36-hole mixed Chapman with gross and net prizes available.
Special events include a putting contest, team KPs each day, horse race and daily honey pots.
Saturday's play begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, putting contest at 4:30 p.m. and crab feed at 6 p.m.
Sunday's play begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and hosted lunch at 1:30 p.m. with awards to follow.

The North Peninsula Building Association's 10th-annual golf tournament is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start on Friday, Aug. 21.
The event is at Peninsula Golf Club, 824 S. Lindberg Road in Port Angeles.
Tourney format is a four-person scramble for men and women.
Cost is $90; fee includes cart (two people per), lunch, prizes and one drink ticket. Lunch only is $15 per person.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
Tournament directors are seeking sponsors, with support levels starting at $200.

Parks offer
free weekend
A walk in the park is free for one August weekend for anyone visiting national parks across the country, including Olympic National Park.
All 391 national parks offer free admission Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16.
The entrance fee waiver does not affect fees for activities such as camping, reservations, tours or concessions.

SHS cross country hosts car wash
Sequim High School cross country team members host a car wash from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Chase Bank, formerly Washington Mutual Bank, 680 W. Washington St.
The event raises fund for traveling to a competition in Seaside, Ore., later this year.

Peninsula College is home to the Port Angeles Youth Soccer Club coaching clinic for E licenses this August.
The camp is slated for
8 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 23 and 5-9 p.m. Aug. 24 and 25.
The camp is at the college soccer fields, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
Cost is $25 per participant
This Washington State Youth Soccer Association course focuses on coaching points and the teaching of technique, with an introduction to the Principles of Play (attack and defense.) The "E" course also provides elementary information on the management and preparation of a team. Coaches will be asked to play.
Participants need to bring pencil, paper, water, cleats, shin guards and a ball.
Applications and money must be received by Aug. 18; the camp has just 32 spots.

Rowing group gives on-water lessons
The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association and the Clallam County Family YMCA offer on-water rowing lessons from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from the association's boathouse at 1431 Ediz Hook.
The program is on-the-water rowing for those ages 16 and older, using eight-seat shells with sweep rowing.
Anyone wishing to participate with the rowing club must take a five-week session, set for Aug. 22-Sept. 19.
Preregistration is required. Cost is $60 for YMCA members or $120 for nonmembers.
Participants also need a certified Red Cross float test before being allowed to get into boats.
Experienced rowers and coxswains are asked to help set the boats to enable novices to get their oar blades in and out of the water cleanly.

The Sequim High School athletic department hosts a youth football camp, open to students entering grades 1-8.
The camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon, Aug. 3-6, meeting at the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.
Required equipment includes outdoor shoes and clothing for play outside.
Cost is $45 per athlete; the fee includes a camp T-shirt and a football.
The camp features instruction by a staff from Sequim High School. The focus is on football skills, development and team-building principles. A "Punt, Pass & Kick" competition is scheduled along with daily flag football games.

NFL Flag opens registration for fall league
The Sequim NFL Flag fall league is open to boys and girls of ages 6-12.
The co-ed league with multiple age divisions runs from Sept. 3-Nov. 2 with games at the Sequim High School playfields, 601 N. Sequim Ave., during afternoons.
Register and pay online at www.sequimnfl-flag.com through July 30. Late registrants may have to pay a late fee.
Cost is $35 for Boys & Girls Club members; nonmembers pay an $8 seasonal membership fee.
Required equipment includes a mouth guard and cleats.

The Christmas/winter holiday break is always a little goofy here at the Sequim Gazette sports desk (i.e. my desk). Most high school sports hut down, as do most of the area’s golf, volleyball, running and other recreational sports programs.
