Sequim's Zoei Zbaraschuk already has a plethora of letters in her name.

After another outstanding spring golf season, she can add three more: M-V-P.

The SHS junior, along with fellow all-league first team honoree Kim Duce, helped the Wolves to an Olympic League 2A division championship, a win in April against 3A champion Port Angeles and much respect from league coaches, who awarded Zbaraschuk the league's Most Valuable Player award for 2009.

Sequim High senior Colby Rude earned All-League first team honors on the boys' side as the Wolves went 6-1 and also won the Olympic League 2A division crown, their only loss coming to 3A Olympic, the overall league champion.

Heading into the postseason, Sequim's boys and girls have similar paths. They both were scheduled to play at the Olympic League tournament at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton on May 11.

The top four players from each Olympic and Nisqually League gets an automatic state berth while players No. 5-10 from each league plus five players from Interlake High School - a total of 17 - play at the West Central District Tournament at Eagle Pride Golf Course in Tacoma on May 18, with just four state berths up for grabs.

Boys nab pair of league wins

With the Hood Canal bridge closed, Sequim's boys kept their links competition local.

And they kept up their winning streak, too.

The Wolves scored their sixth consecutive win with

victories against Port Town-send and Port Angeles last week.

On May 4, Sequim overcame some windy conditions to top P.T.'s Redskins, 121-89 in Stableford scoring, behind the round of 79 for Colby Rude (31 points) and Ryan O'Mera's round of 83. Brendon Gilles was third with a round of 85 followed by Josh Francis and Chad Quinet with rounds of 87. Ben Reinhart led Port Townsend with a round of 81, good for 27 points.

The Wolves capped their regular season in style, dropping Port Angeles 111-86 in the driving wind and rain on May 5. Gilles took medalist honors with a round of 80 (30 points), with O'Mera coming in second with a round of 82. Scott Kilzer led Port Angeles with 23 Stableford points.

Sequim lost just one league match this season, a March 24 contest against eventual league champion Olympic.

For high school hoops teams, a state berth. Or a game-winning “miracle” shot. Or the kid on the team who hasn't played all year makes a basket.

Edgar Martinez, in his first year of eligibility, didn’t make it into the Hall of Fame. No, it’s not a travesty, but it’s not right either, and hopefully sports writers will get a brain some day and put the guy in.

Best SHS game ever? — revisited
Tue, Jan 5, 2010

For those of you keeping up with the blog, I’ve posted a few times about my favorite Sequim prep games these last 10 years. I was thumbing through the old files for this one, and thought it might be fun to revisit one of SHS’s best football games of all time.

Is the WIAA’s reclassification a good thing for Sequim?
Tue, Dec 29, 2009

Don’t get me wrong: Reclassifying prep teams is, in general, a good thing. But THIS isn’t going to work.
