Peninsula softball team takes second

in ‘Eye Opener’

PDQ Auto Repair, a 14U softball team made up of players from Sequim and Port Angeles,

took second place overall at the Eye Opener tournament April 4-5 in Federal Way, the

team’s first tourney of the 2009 season.

After losing the opener to the host Federal Way Mosquito squad 7-1, PDQ came back to

beat the Washington Phoenix 7-0. In game three, the peninsula team tied the Kitsap

Stingers 1-1 in a contest shortened because of time constraints.

In the first elimination game on Sunday, the tourney semifinal, PDQ rebounded from seven

errors and an 8-2 deficit to beat the Mosquito squad 11-9.

In the championship game, PDQ Auto Repair kept the Kitsap Stingers close after a

scoreless three innings but eventually fell 7-1.

Sequim’s Bailey Rhodefer got the game ball for her offense after going 6-for-10 with three

triples.

PDQ’s next tournament is April 25-26 in Kent.



Pitch, hit, run event set for Sunday

The Port Angeles Recreation Department hosts the 2009 Aquafina Pitch, Hit & Run

Baseball Competition at 1 p.m. April 19 at Volunteer Field in Port Angeles.

Formerly called Diamond Skills, the Pitch, Hit, & Run program is a baseball skills

competition for youths ages 7-14. Each participant throws six pitches at a strike zone target,

does a timed run from second base to home plate and hits the ball off a tee for distance and

accuracy. Boys and girls compete together in their respective age groups and metal cleats

are not allowed for the competition. There is no charge to participate. Participants are asked

to bring a copy of their birth certificate.

Winners advance to the sectional competition at Everett Memorial Stadium on May 17.

Anglers talk halibut

The North Olympic Peninsula Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers meets at 6:45 p.m., April 16

at Trinity United Methodist Church (100 Blake Ave.) to talk about the upcoming halibut

season.

The halibut season opens on April 23 in fishing area 6, eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca. Club

members provide advice on fishing locations and demonstration of equipment.

Horse open-schooling show set for April 18

The County Mounty 4-H Horse Club and the Jefferson County 4-H Horse Project are

hosting their third-annual open schooling show on

Saturday, April 18, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend.

Performance classes start at 9 a.m. and Western Games begin following Performance.

Performance classes are $5 and Western Games classes are $4 each.

Stalls available on first come, first served basis with a $20 refundable stall fee if left clean.

High Point prizes awarded for all divisions. Show forms are available at most feed and

tack stores and at Washington State University Extension in Port Hadlock. For more

BMX track season starts April 18

The Port Angeles BMX Track opens the 2009 season with practices and races April 18-19.

The course, located just south of the Clallam County Fairgrounds near William R. Fairchild

International Airport in Port Angeles, is home to races on Tuesdays, Saturdays and

Sundays, and practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Saturdays.

Sign-up times are: Tuesday races, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Saturday races, 3:30-4:30 p.m.; and

Sunday races, 11 a.m.-noon.

The BMX season’s Relay for Life event is July 18 and the state champion race is July 19.

Silver Spurs put

on horse show

The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Project and Silver Spurs 4-H Club host an open

schooling show on Saturday, May 2, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port

Townsend.

Performance classes start at 9 a.m. with Western Games to follow.

Performance classes are $4 each and Western Games are $3 each for entries postmarked

by April 27, with a $1 late fee per class for entries postmarked after April 27 or day of

show.

Stalls are available on a first-come, first-served basis with a refundable stall deposit if left

clean.

Show forms are available at most feed and tack stores and the Washington State University

Extension Office in Port Hadlock.

Local gymnasts

earn tickets to state

Ten Level 4 and 5 gymnasts from Klahhane Gymnastics competed in the North Sectional

competition at Northwest Aerials in Kirkland on April 5.

Competing in the Level 4 age 9-10 competition and advancing to state competition at

Inglemoor High School on April 25 in the Silver Division were Adare McMinn (34.50

points) and Cami Ortloff (34.425). Saige Hefton (32.95) and Nikki Price (32.325)

advanced to state in the Bronze Division.

In Level 5 competition, Katyn Flores (34.225 points) and Maya Wharton (34 points)

advanced to the Level 5 state meet at Glacier Peak High School on May 2 placing second

and third in the 9-year-old-age group. Clarissa Preston and Ashlynn Uvila received at large

berths to state scoring 33.70 and 33.075 points, respectively. Also competing in the Level 5

Sectional meet were Lillian Oden and Emily VanDyken.
