For much of the spring, the worry for Sequim's girls track & field squad was - and remains - in the turnout numbers.

One meet into the season, the lack of bodies hasn't seemed to slow them down.

The Wolves took first in 11 of 18 events as they swept Klahowya and Olympic last week.

The boys had a tougher time with 3A foe Olympic, taking second to the Trojans by 25 points.

Lauryn Garrett led the charge for Sequim's girls, winning four events - 100 and 30 hurdles, triple jump and high jump - and helping the 4x200 relay take first place as Sequim scored 95.5 points, outpacing Klahowya (60.5) and Olympic (28).

Laura Moser took top honors in both 800 and 1600 events while Anna LaBeaume extended her Sequim High School record in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 11 inches. LaBeaume also took second in the 100- and 200-

meter sprints.

Samantha Whiteside topped the field in the pole vault after clearing 9 feet and took second in the 400-meter race.

Audrey Lichten was tops in the 3,200-meter race and took second to Moser in the 800.

Sierra Clark had a 90-foot, 3-inch javelin throw to win the event.

Becca Lindgren of Klahowya won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter sprints plus the long jump.

On the boys' side, Olympic was simply too much with 92 points, racing past Sequim (67) and Klahowya (20).

Brendon Schruhl, Travis Quinn and Larry Dixon led the Trojans to victory. Schruhl swept the 800-, 1,600- and 3200-meter events while Quinn took both hurdles races. Dixon won the 200 and shot put events.

Sequim's Derrell Jensen was a two-event winner, taking first in the 400-meter race and triple jump and placing second in the long jump.

Kevin Beck won the discus with a throw of 105 feet, 3 inches while Sequim's 4x400 relay team - Emmanuel Herrera, Alex Jenkins, Ben Ohnstad and Jared Lindorfer - provided Sequim's only other first-place finish.

Tyler Wilson-Walters took second in the 3,200-meter race and third in the javelin while Jenkins was second in the 800 and Ohnstad placed second in the metric mile.

James Finnen was second in the pole vault and Josh Fodge was runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles. Lindorfer was second in the high jump, followed by Joey Hall in third.

Sequim is back in action April 17 at Port Angeles to take on the Roughriders and Port Townsend's Redskins.



LaBeaume renews school shot put mark

She's beginning to make this look easy.

Sequim junior Anna LaBeaume broke her own school mark in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 2.25 inches, taking first pace at the prestigious Tacoma Invite Saturday.

The mark is the best in the state.

Several other Sequim athletes took top finishes from the meet, including Derrell Jensen in the triple jump (43 feet, 8 inches, a personal best), Samantha Whiteside in the pole vault (9-6), Christina Bruce in the 3,200 (12:11.31), Lauryn Garrett in the 100 hurdles (17.23) and David Copeland in the pole vault (10-3).

Audrey Lichten added a second-place finish in the freshman/sophomore 1,600-meter race with a 5:32 mark.

In all, Sequim athletes set nine personal best marks at Tacoma.
