Wolves whip Pirates 4-1

The wind picked up so much Friday afternoon, the Vashon goalie joked it might blow him away.

Sure, if the Sequim attackers didn't do it first.

The Wolves (3-1) got two goals in each half to knock off the visiting Pirates for their second nonleague win of the season March 20.

Erik Huston and Aldo Garcia gave the Wolves a 2-1 advantage by halftime and goals by Evan Watkins and David LaBeaume sealed the win.

It didn't hurt that Vashon was lacking three key players who missed the contest to play in an all-star basketball game.

It was the second win in as many days, as the Wolves dominated an outmatched North Mason team 2-0 the night before.

"They were a little tense last night, a little timid," Sequim coach Dave Brasher said. "They were a lot better today."

The Wolves attacked early and often, with freshman Evan Watkins pressuring up the middle and Huston and Garcia attacking from the sides. Huston found the net first - sort of. He took a Watkins pass and drove to the end line, then chipped a shot off the post and Vashon defender into the goal for his third goal of the season.

Garcia added a second goal a few minutes later with a drive from the left side, out-maneuvering Pirate defenders for his second season score.

Vashon halved the Sequim lead with a drive through the heart of the Sequim defense just before halftime.

But the Wolves were not to be denied, scoring twice with the wind at their backs in the second half. Watkins got his first varsity goal and LaBeaume, playing limited minutes thanks to injury, found the net for his first goal in 2009.

"Vashon's a good, fine team," Brasher said. "We're still nursing injuries."

Despite being "timid" against the Bulldogs, the Wolves out-shot North Mason 16-1 a day before in a 2-0 win. Garcia broke a scoreless tie 33 minutes into the contest and Nick Camporini got the game-clincher with eight minutes left, while Matt Bedinger and the Sequim defense got its first shutout of the young 2009 season.

On March 17, the Wolves fell to Chimacum 3-2. Chimacum's Kobi Albright found the back of the net with just six minutes remaining to break a 2-2 tie and give the Cowboys a 3-2, non-league win against Sequim.

Mitch McHugh opened the scoring for the Wolves off an assist from Kris Lawrence seven minutes into the game. But Albright scored the first of his two goals 10 minutes later and the teams went halftime tied at 1-1.

Micah Dilts scored Sequim's second goal off another assist from Lawrence four minutes into the second half and it took another 20 minutes for Chimacum to get the game-tying score, a blast from Keegan Young, before Albright pushed in the game-winner.

Best SHS game ever? — revisited

For those of you keeping up with the blog, I’ve posted a few times about my favorite Sequim prep games these last 10 years. I was thumbing through the old files for this one, and thought it might be fun to revisit one of SHS’s best football games of all time.
