Sequim High School sports trivia moment: Name the only team in school history to win a team state championship.

Give up? The girls' tennis team in 2007.

In 2009, a senior-laden Wolves squad looks to get back to the pinnacle once again, led by

junior Kyla Hall and senior Blaire Maloney.

The duo was a perfect 6-0 in the 2008 regular season as

Sequim won the Olympic League 2A title, then advanced to the state tournament where they went 1-2, missing the medal stand by one match.

Returnee Angela Richards posted a 6-1 regular season singles record as a junior last season. She qualified for the West Central District tourney and barely missed a state berth.

Seniors Caihley Baker and Diana Earl are also back; the two posted eight wins as a doubles team in 2008.

Mark Textor, the head coach who guided Sequim to its first school team title in 2007, said he likes what he sees from the current crop of Sequim net-minders.

"I'm really optimistic about this team," Textor said. "They have amazing attitudes and they have a great time in practice."

In the last six seasons, the Wolves have put that practice to good use. They are 63-10 overall, including three undefeated seasons in a row (2005-2007).

The 2009 Wolves will have plenty of competition, Textor said, with the Klahowya Eagles adding a pair of strong newcomers on the court to an already strong roster.

On the 3A side of the Olympic League, the Sequim coach figures Port Angeles and North Kitsap offer tough competition and possible overall league champs.

"We're no slouches either," Textor added.

Sequim High Wolves girls tennis

Head coach: Mark Textor (11th year overall)

2008 record: 8-4, Olympic League 2A champs; fourth at districts; one doubles team to state

Returning players: Kyla Hall, Blaire Maloney, Angela Richards, Diana Earl, Mary Cherrett, Caihley Baker, Kari Hankins, Amanda Tjemsland

Top newcomers: Stacy Hanson, Catrina Chann

Outlook: This experienced Sequim team figures to be one of the best - if not the favorites - for an Olympic League title. State qualifiers Hall and Maloney have a legitimate shot at not only returning state but also placing, and placing well.

Break out your brackets, hoops fans
Tue, Mar 16, 2010

I can’t help but feel a little helpless this March. You see, as of early Tuesday afternoon, my NCAA March Madness brackets remain empty.

For high school hoops teams, a state berth. Or a game-winning “miracle” shot. Or the kid on the team who hasn't played all year makes a basket.

Best SHS game ever? — revisited
Tue, Jan 5, 2010

For those of you keeping up with the blog, I’ve posted a few times about my favorite Sequim prep games these last 10 years. I was thumbing through the old files for this one, and thought it might be fun to revisit one of SHS’s best football games of all time.

Is the WIAA’s reclassification a good thing for Sequim?
Tue, Dec 29, 2009

Don’t get me wrong: Reclassifying prep teams is, in general, a good thing. But THIS isn’t going to work.
