puts on fundraiser

The Peninsula 4-Leaf Clover Volleyball Tournament, set for March 14 at Port Angeles High School, is a fundraiser for the Olympic Peninsula Team Turbo youth volleyball club.

The tourney is co-ed (two males, two females or one male, three females) and features four divisions: B (recreation), BB (experienced recreation), A (advanced) and AA (very advanced).

There is a cash prize for first place and T-shirts for second place.

Cost is $80 per team.

Registrations are due by

March 9.

Walking club eyes

Port Angeles history

The Olympic Peninsula Explorers Volkssport Club is scheduled to host a group 10-kilometer club walk Feb. 28, starting at 9 a.m. at the Red Lion Inn, 221 N. Lincoln St. in Port Angeles.

The walk is slated to view historical buildings and landmarks and the outdoor art displays in downtown Port Angeles.

Women's basketball league registration opens

Port Angeles Recreation is registering teams for the first women's basketball league.

Coaches can pick up a registration packet at the recreation office, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Players who do not have a team on which to play can put their names on the "free agent" list.

Deadline to register is March 6.

Interested players are encouraged to attend "open gym" at

5 p.m. Sundays at the Port Angeles High School gymnasium, 304 E. Park Ave.

Senior softball spring training starts now

Sequim Senior Softball hosts practice sessions at the two fields at Carrie Blake Park at 10 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday morning through the summer and fall months.

The group meets for fun, exercise and for some, preparation for the upcoming competitive softball league season.

Men of ages 50 years and older and women 45 years and older are welcome to come out for practice and pick-up games.

The competitive league starts in May and includes 13 games. Two teams from Sequim and one each from Port Angeles and Port Townsend are scheduled to play.

'Mat Rats' youth wrestling starts in March

The youth-oriented Mat Rats program begins March 3 with sessions for boys and girls ages 5-12 going from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Sequim Community School gymnasium, 220 W. Alder St.

Dates include Tuesdays and Wednesdays through the end of March (March 3-4, March 10-11, March 17-18 and March 24-25).

Cost is $25 per athlete; pay at the door. Checks should be made out to Sequim Booster Club.

The camp features instruction from Sequim Middle School staff and high school wrestlers, skill development games, a camp T-shirt and tournament.

The focus, program officials say, is on the basic fundamentals of wrestling.

Participants are asked to bring wrestling shoes and/or socks and a T-shirt.

'Hoopfest' teams

There are still openings in the 14th-annual Spring Hoopfest Tournament, set for March 7-8 in Port Angeles.

The tourney features divisions for boys' and girls' basketball teams in grades five-12

The tourney has a four-game guarantee and a $225 entry fee.

Sequim select tryouts slated for March 1

Next Level Basketball, a division of Sequim Youth Basketball, is hosting tryouts for select level tournament basketball teams. Teams include a combined grades four-five boys team and a combined boys grade six-seven boys team.

The grade four-five team tryout is 6-7:30 p.m. March 1 the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

The grade six-seven team tryout is 1-3 p.m. March 1, also in the Sequim Middle School gymnasium.

Players are asked to bring a basketball if possible.

All Sequim boys in grades four-seven who are interested in basketball - including home-schooled and privately schooled students - are invited to attend.

Next Level Basketball players chosen participate in weekly practices and tournaments throughout the Puget Sound area.

Next Level Basketball is committed to providing year-round opportunity and challenge for dedicated basketball players, program officials say.
