Bulldogs put Wolves in a hole

But it was North Mason's boys doing all the hitting, sinking the Wolves with a 59-47 Olympic league victory and making Sequim's chances of hosting a playoff game highly unlikely.
The host Bulldogs earned a sweep after topping Sequim's girls 77-41 in the first of a douleheader Friday night.
On the boys' side, Dashiell Geyer led four North Mason players in double figures with 15 points while John Fullington added 12 points as the Bulldogs used a strong third quarter to vanquish the struggling Sequim squad.
The Wolves (7-12 overall) have lost five of their past six games and at 4-11 in league play needed a win against Olympic and a Klahowya loss to Port Angeles Jan. 17 for any shot at a home playoff game.
Against the Bulldogs, Sequim sharpshooter Ary Webb struck for 20 points, the fourth time he's hit for at least 20 this season, while teammate Jeremie Oliver added 10 points.
North Mason jumped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead on the strength of eight Geyer points, but Sequim responded with a strong second quarter, closing the halftime gap to just 28-24.
The Bulldogs bore down in the third quarter, outscoring Sequim 24-13 in the decisive frame thanks to four three-point bombs.
The Wolves were scheduled to play the team's final regular season contest at Olympic (Silverdale) on Jan. 17; results were unavailable at press time.

For eight minutes, Sequim was the equal of the Olympic League's best 3A team. In the proceeding 24 minutes, however, North Kitsap showed exactly why they're the class of the league.
The Vikings rebounded from a four-point first-quarter deficit to outscore Sequim 53-23 in the final three quarters and take a 64-38 road win in Sequim Feb. 11.
Kyle Erickson led North Kitsap with 16 points while Brandon Huggins had 15 points.
"They got some nice, open shots," Greg Glasser said of the Vikings. "They have quickness to defend and get to the bucket."
Sequim's Ary Webb scored a team-high 12 points in his return from a bout with mononucleosis.
Taylor Thorson added 10 points for the Wolves - six of them on a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter - and had five assists. John Textor chipped in with nine points and six rebounds while Reed Omdal contributed a pair of steals.
The Wolves led 15-11 after one quarter but North Kitsap dominated the second quarter 18-1 and in the third quarter, 23-9.
Sequim plays in the Olympic League tournament Jan. 21. If the Wolves finish ahead of Klahowya in the league standings, Sequim hosts the Eagles that night at 8 p.m.; if Klahowya finishes ahead of Sequim, the Silverdale school hosts that game. The game's winner takes the Olympic League No. 2 seed to districts; the losing team, the No. 3 seed.
The West Central District playoffs are set to start Feb. 28. The Olympic League No. 2 seed hosts the Nisqually League No. 3 team and the Olympic League No. 3 seed travels to face the Nisqually No. 2 seed. Winners advance; losing teams are done for the season.

Sequim's girls squad ran into a pair of powerful Olympic League teams last week, falling behind quickly in the first half of both games before finishing strong with fourth-quarter flourishes.
The Wolves fell to North Mason 77-41 on Feb. 13, thanks to a 41-20 first-half North Mason run.
Stephanie Hicks and Jennifer Hupper paced the Bulldogs with 19 points each.
Lauryn Garrett led the Wolves with 15 points while Sunma Agostine added 11 points and Lea Hopson scored eight.
Sequim broke the 40-point barrier for the second time this season.
On Feb. 11, Sequim fell behind host North Kitsap 31-7 in the first quarter and saw the Vikings run away with a 60-35 league victory.
Freshman Delanee Nilles bombarded the Wolves with a triple-double - 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals - while teammate Darcey Hughes added 18 points, five steals and six blocks.
Agostine and Hopson led Sequim with seven points each. Hopson had three steals in the fourth quarter.
Sequim coach Lisa Corbit said she was encouraged by what she saw from her team in the last quarter.
"The last six minutes ... these girls played the best they have all year," Corbit said.
"We were just flat-footed on defense (to start)," she said. "But they fight to the last minute. Everyone was involved in the game (and) it was a fun finish."

The Christmas/winter holiday break is always a little goofy here at the Sequim Gazette sports desk (i.e. my desk). Most high school sports hut down, as do most of the area’s golf, volleyball, running and other recreational sports programs.
