At least there's fight left in these Wolves.

Sequim's girls basketball squad took a winless mark going into a Jan. 27 contest at Port Townsend after a pair of losses to Kitsap County teams last week.

The Wolves fell to Klahowya Jan. 20 and at Bremerton three days later, running their 2008-2009 season mark to 0-10 in Olympic League play and 0-13 overall.

Against Bremerton, the Wolves fell behind 15-4 in the first quarter before hitting a rhythm, scoring 15 points in the second quarter and going into the half down 31-19.

But Bremerton, behind Kelsey Johnson's 24 points, out-scored the Wolves 18-9 in the third quarter, 12 from Johnson alone, and pulled away with a 69-37 victory.

"(Johnson) started hitting from the outside; she was making everything she put up,"

Sequim coach Lisa Corbit said.

Knight Keely Fein added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Alex Rose-Albert led the Wolves with nine points and Yela Minor added eight points and 11 rebounds. Lauryn Garrett had four steals.

"Everyone ... is working hard, played with heart and going after balls," Corbit said. "They are still keeping their heads up; they're leaving everything they can on the court."

The Sequim coach said her team was focused on stopping Jalen Carpenter, the Bremerton freshman who scorched the Wolves for 32 points the last

time the teams met. Garrett blanketed Carpetenter Friday, holding her to just seven points.

Sequim committed 30 turnovers in the loss. It's the 12th time in 13 games the Wolves failed to break the 40-point mark.

Sequim was slated to take on Port Townsend's Redskins last night - results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves challenge Kingston on Jan. 30.



Eagles soar to big

lead, top Sequim

After 11 years of defeat, Klahowya can claim a new, more positive streak.

The Eagles topped Sequim 50-32 on Jan. 20, giving them a season sweep and two-game winning streak against the Wolves.

When Klahowya edged

Sequim 38-37 on Dec. 5, it ended a 21-game, 11-year losing streak to the Wolves that started when the Silverdale school opened in 1997.

Jordan Dixon had 23 points, Carli McElwee added 16 points and 13 rebounds and the Eagles raced to a 32-7 halftime lead before Sequim closed the gap.

Garrett and Kathryn Roeber led Sequim with eight points each; Sunma Agostine added seven points.
