Youth basketball team hosts tryouts

Sequim Youth basketball coaches are conducting a tryout session to develop a combined sixth/seventh grade select boys basketball team.

The tryout is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, in the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

All sixth- and seventh-grade male Sequim youths including home-schooled or privately schooled students who are interested in basketball are invited to attend. The team will be comprised of eight to 10 players and will compete in local tournaments during January and February.

Players are asked to bring a basketball to the tryout if possible.

For more information, contact coach Jeff Carter at 460-6477.

Middle school boys improve to 4-0

After earning a league title in 2007-2008 as seventh-graders, Sequim Middle School's varsity boys basketball squad is well in its way to another crown.

The Timberwolves kept their perfect record intact with a two-point win against Port Angeles Dec. 15. They've also posted wins against Port Angeles' other eighth-grade team, Chimacum and Port Townsend.

Team leaders are Jayson Brocklesby and Gabe Carter in scoring, with Austin Law, Dylan Eckoff and Shawn Buck leading in rebounds.

"I'm pleased with the effort so many of the guys have put into practicing during the off-season," coach Kris Henrikson said. "I'm excited to see what we can accomplish as a team in the second half of the season."

The Timberwolves are back in action Jan. 8 at home against Chimacum; game time is 4:45 p.m.

King tourney set for mid-January

The Port Angeles Recreation Department's Martin Luther King basketball tournament is scheduled for Jan. 17-18, with divisions for boys and girls in grades 5-8.

Teams pay $225 to enter and play at least four games.

For more information or to register, call Dan Estes at 417-4557 or e-mail to: destes@cityofpa.us.

For those of you keeping up with the blog, I’ve posted a few times about my favorite Sequim prep games these last 10 years. I was thumbing through the old files for this one, and thought it might be fun to revisit one of SHS’s best football games of all time.
