Sequim coach Lisa Corbit says she's surprised that after watching her team hustle for 32 hard minutes, they are on the wrong end of a 20-point loss.

"They are all going out, sprinting down to play defense," Corbit said. "They never give up toward the end of the game. They're still playing like they're still in the game (and) that's one thing we keep focusing on. There's no quitters out there, no egos."

Unfortunately for all their efforts, there aren't any wins either.

Sequim capped a long, three-game week with their third loss at Fife High School on Saturday, falling to their nonleague opponent 56-37.

Down just three points at halftime, an outsized Sequim squad simply ran out of steam in the second half 16 minutes, getting out-scored 35-19.

"Our press worked, really worked, for us the first half," Corbit said, noting she tried a three-guard rotation in the beginning. "We just didn't have the manpower to do that for four quarters."

Sunma Agostine led Sequim with 15 points, the highest output for any Wolf this season, while teammate Lea Hopson chipped in with 10 points, three assists and two steals. Lauryn Garrett had four assists and Yela Minor grabbed 10 rebounds.

Shelly Kilcup led Fife with 24 points.

"(Kilcup) got real hot in the third quarter from the top of the key," Corbit said.

At 0-4, Sequim has to regroup this week to play Port Angeles. The strong Roughrider team is 4-0 and poised to battle North Kitsap for the Olympic League title.

The two teams clash Dec. 19. Game time is 5:15 p.m. followed by the boys' Sequim-Port Angeles match-up.

"It's the biggest game of the year," Corbit said. "The girls are looking forward to it. They're just keeping that same (positive) attitude."



Redskins get past Wolves

Too many scorers.

That's what Sequim faced last Friday in a 61-36 loss to Port Townsend.

Ilsa Barrett and Alyx Coppenrath had 17 points and Sophie Wilson added nine points as the Redskins made quick work of the Wolves.

Corbit said she pinned Garrett, her top defender, on Wilson, a deft guard with fine shooting touch.

But Barrett and Coppenrath were up to the task, hitting shots when Wilson was blanketed.

On offense, the Wolves couldn't get their shots to go, making for a long night; they were down 14-5 after one quarter, 34-17 at halftime and 47-23 after three quarters.

"We're getting open looks; it's just, the baskets aren't falling," Corbit said. "Plus, we're outsized."

Garrett led Sequim with 10 points, followed by Hopson and Kathryn Roeber with eight points each.



North Mason

gets first win

This one was decided by halftime.

North Mason's Bulldogs streaked to a 34-12 lead in the first two quarters to blow past the home Wolves 60-24 in a battle of teams seeking their first wins.

Stephanie Hicks led the visitors with 17 points while Kylie Harris added a dozen as the only players in double figures for the night.

Agostine led the Wolves with seven points while Roeber had six points and Nicole Phifer chipped in with four.
