The hunt for a state playoff win will have to wait.

Sequim High's volleyball squad ran into a tough draw at the class 2A state tournament last weekend in Kennewick, falling to eventual state runner-up Selah in the opener Friday and getting knocked out of the tourney Saturday at the hands of Hockinson.

In the Wolves' first foray into the class 2A tourney since dropping down a classification in 2006, Sequim ran into a familiar foe. The Selah Vikings, ranked No. 2 with a perfect 14-0 record heading into the state tourney, beat Sequim the past two times (2002 and 2004) the Wolves were at state.

Selah made it three straight when they dropped Sequim into the consolation round with a three-set win, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-11.

On Saturday, Sequim battled Hockinson and nearly topped the Hawks but eventually fell in four sets (25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 25-10).

Kari Hankins led the Wolves with 16 assists, while Caitlin Pallai had six assists and Megan Zumbuhl added five kills.

Selah went on to the state 2A finals, falling to champion Tumwater. Former Sequim Wolf Alex Sele led the way with 19 kills and four blocks in the four-set win for Tumwater's Thunderbirds.

Looking ahead, Sequim sees six seniors graduate but returns several athletes who were full-time or part-time varsity players, including Pallai, Maddy Zbaraschuk, Sierra Clark, Keli Haffner, Sarah Donahue and Sara Hankins.
