Little League meeting set

Several board positions are up for grabs at the next Sequim Little League meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at the James Standard Fields clubhouse, 136 W. Silberhorn Road.

Open board positions include treasurer, boys' player agent, girls' coaches agent and umpire chief.

The meeting agenda includes discussion of adding new board positions such as T-ball coordinator, plus discussion about getting more help for field maintenance.

SHS cross country hosts

first practice, car wash

The first practice for Sequim high School's cross country squad is slated for 4:30 p.m., Aug. 25 at Railroad Bridge Park.

Those trying out are asked to bring a history of physicals and required fall sports cards.

Members of the Sequim High School cross country team are also hosting a car wash from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 23 in front of Safeway, 680 W. Washington St.

Money raised helps defray costs associated with taking the 40-member team to compete in the Three-Course Challenge at Seaside, Ore., on Sept. 20.



Locals get aces

on same day

Jeff Upchurch of Sequim and Denny Negus of Port Angeles both sank a hole-in-one at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on Aug. 11.

Upchurch drove the 146-yard hole No. 8 with a 9-iron; fellow Sequim residents Ron Sather, Larry Smithson and Carl Taylor witnessed the feat.

Negus also used a 9-iron, acing the fourth hole from 145 yards out.

Kip McKeever, Jim Olsen and Dick Thompson witnessed the ace.



Angler group hosts

PNNL research scientist

The Puget Sound Anglers, North Olympic Peninsula Chapter, features guest speaker Nikki Sather at its next regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Sather is a research scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Sequim. She is scheduled to speak about "The Early Life History of Juvenile Salmon in the Dungeness River Estuary."

Coed soccer league

starts in Port Angeles

A coed soccer league for adults 19 and older begins Sept. 7 in Port Angeles.

Games are at Civic Field on Race Street.

Pick up registration packets at the Port Angeles Recreation office, 308 E. Fourth St. Registration deadline is Sept. 2.

Zbaraschuk gets win at

PNGA event in Longview

Sequim's Zoei Zbaraschuk took home a win in match-play of the 53rd Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Girls' Amateur Championship at Longview Country Club recently.

Zbaraschuk won the sixth flight after Celia Beyke of Federal Way was disqualified.

Defending champion Rui Li of Kent won the first flight title.

The tournament attracted 48 girls from across the state, all of them age 17-and-younger, for the four-day event, according to The Daily News of Longview.



NFL flag football

registration now open

Sequim NFL flag football is accepting registrations for the fall 2008 season.

Players ages 6-12 (as of Sept. 1, 2008) are eligible.

Games are played at Greywolf Elementary School fields (171 Carlsborg Road) or the Boys & Girls Club (400 W. Fir St.).

Registration costs ($26 for Boys & Girls Club members, $32 for nonmembers) are to be paid at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club. Registration is open until Aug. 25. Registration fee includes cost of NFL jersey and NFL flags.

Gymnastics club

hosts classes

Port Angeles-based Klahhane Gymnastics is accepting registration for limited openings in beginning recreational classes for children 4-12.

Registrations are accepted through Aug. 29; classes begin Sept. 6.

Pick up a fall season schedule and registration packet by sending an e-mail to janu@tfon.com. Gymnasts with previous experience who are interested in the pre-competitive or the Level 3-7 competitive teams may call 460-3939 or 457-3698 for information and an evaluation appointment. Pre-competitive and competitive team workouts resume Sept. 2.
