Trio of Wolves named to baseball all-star team

Sequim hardballers Ben Grubb, Jonathan Thom and Max Royall were named to the 2008 Snapple Senior Baseball Games at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds last week.

The Sequim seniors represented the Olympic League in a pair of games May 29.

Behind strong hitting from games MVP Caleb Brown of Central Kitsap, the Narrows League swept the doubleheader 13-3 and 7-4. Port Angeles' Eric Lane, the Olympic League MVP, hit a three-run home run in the first game.



Sequim's Varner

gets PTC scholarship

The Peninsula Tennis Club has awarded two scholarships to high school seniors this school year: Bryan Varner of Sequim and Vanessa Estes of Port Angeles.

Varner, whom club officials note is an active club member and a mainstay at Sequim Sunday community tennis sessions, was awarded a $500 scholarship. He plans to attend Washington State University and study mechanical engineering. Estes was awarded $350 and plans to study psychology at a community college before transferring to a university.



SHS girls' soccer meets

A preseason meeting for athletes interested in playing for the Sequim High School girls' soccer team next fall is scheduled for

7 p.m. June 5 at the school library, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Sequim Senior Baseball hosts annual auction, banquet

The annual dinner and silent auction benefiting Sequim Senior Baseball, a traveling summer team of high school-aged ballplayers, is scheduled for 6 p.m., June 7 at John Wayne Marina.

Cost is $8 per person or $15 per couple.

Meet of Champions

Sequim High School sophomore Alli Cutting topped the field in the 3200 at the 2008 Brooks Meet of Champions in Shoreline May 31, finishing in 11:04.79.

Cutting, fresh off a second-place finish in the 800 and third- place finish in the 3200 at the class 2A state track meet in May, helped Team Washington, made up of track stars from across the state, top all-star athletes from Oregon in the annual competition.

"The competition wasn't as intense; the whole atmosphere was relaxed," Cutting said of the meet.



Adams sets course mark

James Adams of Sequim set a race record for the males 65-69 division at Port Townsend's 30th Rhody Run 12k at Fort Worden May 25, finishing the course in 54:38, or about 7:20 per mile.

Adams and Adrian Clifford (males 13-15 division) were age group winners while Angela Bentley (females 5-12, second place), Ione Marcy (females 45-49, third), David Stahl (males 65-59, third), Anton Clifford (males 19-24, sixth) and Peggy VanBuskirk (females 55-59, seventh) each earned top-10 age group finishes in the 1,900-runner-strong Rhody race.

The 18-hole Seven Cedars Women's Group welcome visitors and newcomers to play each Tuesday at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course, 1965 Woodcock Road.

Sequim hosts summer doubles tennis challenge

The third-annual Sequim Ultimate Doubles Challenge is slated for June 21 at the Sequim High School tennis courts, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Sponsored by the Peninsula Tennis Club, the event includes a day of doubles with different partners, food and socializing.

Play is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (A rain-out date is set for June 22.)

Players of all skill levels are invited and enter as individuals. Entries are limited to 30 players.

Cost is $7.50 for club members or $12.50 for nonmembers; all players are asked to bring an assigned snack.

Claws & Paws golf set for June 28 at Cedars

The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society is teaming up with local sponsors and golfers to help local animals at the third annual "Claws and Paws" Golf Tournament, set for June 28 at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course, 1965 Woodcock Road.

The 18-hole, two-person scramble begins at 8 a.m., with registration starting at 7 a.m. The event features two divisions, handicap and Calloway.

Entries are limited to the first 100 players. The $100 entry fee includes cart, range balls, tee prizes, longest drive prizes, KPs, raffle tickets and luncheon, with a prize field of $1,500 - based on 100 players.

Tickets for the luncheon only are $15.

All proceeds go to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, a nonprofit group in Port Angeles; all donations are tax deductible.
