On the schedule, it’s a non-league game with no playoff implications.

But it’s still the same old Sequim-Port Angeles rivalry and Sequim’s boys still wanted a win.

The Wolves got exactly that in a 3-0 shutout of the Roughriders Saturday.

Jeff Catton and Greg Dunbar had first-half goals while Kai Antrim added a third goal in the second half as Sequim rolled.

It’s the Wolves’ fifth victory in six games against the Roughriders (the other was a tie). The last time Sequim lost to Port Angeles was March 17, 2003.

“We played hard; we played well,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said. “It was a non-league (game). We talked about … trying a few new things and we did that.”

Catton found the net first, connecting on a free kick from about 25 yards out about halfway through the first half. Dunbar made it 2-0 after taking a drop from Kevin Munro.

In the second half, with a number of lineup shifts on the field, Jose Najera found a streaking Antrim who rifled a shot past the P.A. keeper for his 32nd SHS goal, breaking his own career school record.

Sequim goalkeeper Matt Bedinger earned the shutout.

The win was a far cry from what happened in Poulsbo two days earlier when the Kingston Buccaneers shocked the Wolves 4-0.

It was the second meeting between the two schools; the Wolves and Bucs played to a scoreless tie in a non-league game March 8. This time around, a couple of mistakes on defense for Sequim helped contribute to the loss.

“We were just unsure of each other on defense,” Brasher noted. “We had two miscommunications. It was real ugly.”

Four different Kingston players — Riley Anderson, Brian Bain, Bobby Catania and J.J. Gilson — each found the net. Catania opened the scoring in the ninth minute on an assist from Gilson, and Gilson made the score 2-0 at the 22-minute mark to cap the first-half scoring. Bain (60 minutes) and Anderson (79 minutes) followed with second-half scores.

“That’s history,” Brasher said, looking ahead to an April 29 match-up with Kingston in Sequim. “We’ve got them again. That (will be) key.”

Sequim was scheduled to play at Klahowya March 25 — results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves get a two-week break before returning to action April 8 at Bremerton. Their next home contest is April 10 against the Olympic Trojans of Silverdale.
