In games like these, even the slightest miscue can doom a team.

A throwing error in the top of the eighth inning allowed the only run of the game to score, just moments after

Sequim pitching ace Carly Swingle gave up Klahowya’s only hit of the game, and the Eagles came away with a 1-0 Olympic League win Friday afternoon.

“We played well; we knew these teams would be tough,” Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson said. “(We had) one stinking error and that’s the one that counted.”

In the waning moments of Friday’s game, it looked as if the Wolves (1-2 in league, 2-2 overall) were going to be the beneficiaries of the error bugaboo. In the bottom of the seventh in the scoreless tie, Sequim’s Madison Zbaraschuk ripped a single to center. Yolanda Chinn set down a bunt that Klahowya mishandled, allowing Zbaraschuk and Chinn to advance to second and third with no outs.

But Kazandra Holliday worked out of the jam by getting two strikeouts and a ground out, pushing the game into extra innings.

After Sequim second baseman Lea Hopson snagged a sure line drive double for the first out, Klahowya catcher Jocylyn Meadows ripped a Swingle pitch for a triple to center. Third baseman Hailey McHugh caught a pop-up for the second out, but Swingle threw low on a bunt attempt with two outs, allowing Meadows to score from third.

Holliday worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth for the win. She finished with 16 strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Swingle nearly matched her, getting eight strikeouts, walking two and giving up just the one hit for her second loss.

Kylee Mildenberger had the other Sequim hit.

“Whoever blinks first (loses),” Hendrickson said. “It just happened to be us. This kind of game makes us a better team.”

seventh, topple Wolves

For six innings, everything looked right for the Sequim Wolves.

Then it all came apart.

Olympic took advantage of four Sequim errors and racked up six runs all in the sixth inning — including a three-run triple — to turn a 5-2 Sequim lead into an 8-5 Trojan victory.

“We just choked; we forgot to play seven innings,” Hendrickson said.

Zbaraschuk had two hits and drove in three runs while McHugh drove in the other two, but it wasn’t enough in

Sequim’s first loss of the season.

Swingle (2-1) took the loss on the mound.

Rachel Haas earned the win for the Trojans.



Sequim makes quick work of Seahawks

It’s still early, but the Wolves’ bats appear in midseason form.

The Wolves crushed Peninsula pitching for six runs in the second inning and six runs in the fourth as they pummeled the Peninsula Seahawks of Gig Harbor 13-2 on March 17.

Beverly Buck was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Swingle drove in three runs in the Olympic League opener.

Swingle was tough on the mound, giving up just four hits and two walks in five innings. She struck out five Seahawk batters.
