After a long road trip to Concrete High School, a remote town 45 miles east of Anacortes, the Wolves shook off an early 3-1 deficit to topple the Lions 7-4 in the season opener.

Sequim got strong relief pitching from Ben Grubb and a two-run triple from Reed Omdal in the sixth that proved to be the game-winning hit.

Sequim lead, but Concrete got to Sequim starter Jeremie Oliver for a run in the first and two in the second.

With the score 3-2 Concrete in the sixth inning, Sequim's Jason Baker singled in the tying run and Omdal soon followed with the triple as Sequim pulled ahead.

Baker added an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly.

Meanwhile, Grubb came in for Oliver in the fourth inning and simply dominated Concrete, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced and not allowing a hit. Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said Grubb was hampered at times last season by a blood clot in his shoulder that was treated in September. The senior looked particularly sharp on the mound in his first outing, his coach noted.

Matt Bereiter worked the seventh, giving up two walks and one earned run. In all, Sequim pitchers gave up four hits and six walks, striking out 15 Concrete High batters.

"We got really strong pitching performances," Ditlefsen said. "This (game) was kind of a late add to the schedule. They are a pretty small school but I was impressed with the strength of their baseball team."

A March 15 game at Chimacum was rained out.

The Wolves have a heavy week ahead of them this week: they play Monday (Peninsula), Wednesday (Olympic) and Friday (Klahowya), all at home, and all counting in the league standings.

"This is a big week for us to get a good start," Ditlefsen said.
