Leon M. "Ole" Olson
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. May 23 at Carrie Blake Park, Blake Avenue, for Sequim resident Leon M. "Ole" Olson.
Mr. Olson died May 17, 2009, at the age of 69.
He was born Aug. 8, 1939, in Hadley, Minn.
He graduated from Slayton High School and attended the University of South Dakota before entering the United States Army.
An Army buddy from Forks lured him to Clallam County with promises of great fishing and hunting. He spent his career at Daishowa American in Port Angeles.
After the birth of his grandson in 1987, he joined the AA program, which continued to be an important part of his life. He received and gave support to many others who were walking that journey together.
Mr. Olson is survived by daughter Melinda Olson; sister Marijo Hoffmann; a grandson and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joan Bogle and sister Kay Meyer.
Fred Henry Meinzen
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 3 at Faith Baptist Church, 7652 Old Olympic Highway, Sequim, for Sequim resident Fred Henry Meinzen.
Mr. Meinzen died May 7, 2009, at the age of 75.
He was born July 4, 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Valley Stream on Long Island. He was an avid athlete, earning a varsity letter in five sports one year.
He served two years in the United States Army and later earned an associate degree in dairy technology at Long Island Agriculture and Technical Institute.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in education at SUNY Brockport and two masters of arts, at Northern Arizona University and University of San Francisco, both in education administration.
He married Joanne Blaisdell in 1962.
They lived in Santa Rosa, Calif., for 32 years.
They moved to Sequim in 1997, after he retired from a 31-year teaching career.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Meinzen of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Scott and Stacey Meinzen; daughter and son-in-law Jody and Bill Martinez; and two grandchildren, all living in the Santa Rosa area; sister Margaret Miesemer in Virginia; and many nephews and nieces.
Mr. Meinzen was active in his church, serving as usher, deacon and elder.
He also was involved in a number of organizations, including the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite, Lions Club, and Elks Lodge.
He also served on the Civil Service Commission.

Myrtle Marie Jackson
A service was held for Port Angeles resident Myrtle Marie Jackson, who died May 7, 2009, of ovarian cancer at the age of 88.
She was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Cowiche to James Edward and Eula Marion Smith Sommerville.
She moved to Port Angeles in 1938 and graduated from Roosevelt High School.
She married John Alfred King on Feb. 22, 1942, in Shelton. He preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1965. She married Warren Jackson on Sept. 17, 1969. He preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 1995.
She lived on Blue Mountain Road until 1966 as a homemaker, mother of seven and active farmer's wife. After moving into town, she worked at the laundry at Crestwood. She volunteered at the food bank in her later years. She was a member of Fairview Bible Church and Fairview Grange and was a Cub Scout den mother.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law John and Beverly James, Marvin, Richard and Karen, and Robert and Julie King, all of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Donna and Jim Hawkins of Eagle Rock, Mo., and Mary and Vilas O'Sullivan Sr. of Port Angeles; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers James, Albert, Edward and Marvin and sisters Bertha Sommerville, Pearl Gorman and Janet Beatty.

Donald Lee Simmons
No services were reported for Sequim resident Donald Lee Simmons, who died May 15, 2009, at the age of 83.
He was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Benton, Kan., to Herchel and Grace Mason Simmons.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Elaine Cavanaugh in 1947 in Denver, Colo. She preceded him in death in 2002.
Mr. Simmons was a bank teller, volunteer firefighter and foreman for a utility company, all in Evergreen, Colo. He retired to Sequim in 1986.
He was a 50-year Mason, in Sequim and Colorado and he belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by many cousins and nephews and nieces.

David A. Jones
A memorial service was held for the Rev. David A. Jones of Port Angeles, who died May 11, 2009, at the age of 62.
He was born April 2, 1947, in Holdrege, Neb., to Maxine Morral and Dr. Donald W. Jones.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Denver University in 1969 and a Master of Divinity degree (with honors) from Philadelphia Divinity School in 1972. Ordained in 1972, he was deacon of Nebraska Diocese in 1972 and priest in Nebraska Diocese of the Episcopal Church in 1973.He served a canonical residence in the New York, N.Y., diocese.
From 1972-1976, he was a teaching fellow at General Theological Seminary in New York, N.Y. From 1974-1976, he was assistant to the rector at Holyrood Church in New York, N.Y. He was lecturer at General Theological Seminary from 1977-1979 and assistant to the rector at St. Margaret's Church in the Bronx, N.Y., during that same period.
In 1979, he was lecturer at Fordham University Graduate Department of Religion in the Bronx, N.Y. He was rector at All Souls Church in New York, N.Y., from 1979-1988.
His passion was knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge. He was an avid reader on a variety of subjects and loved to express himself and his emotions through food. He enjoyed family gatherings and loved passionate discussions about life, religion, politics, art, music and film over meals. He also enjoyed nature and was devoted to his dog, Molly. He was a member and priest in the Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his long-time companion Jeanie Goff and her son John Goff of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Vinnie Merriman of Seattle; brother and sister-in-law Don and Linda Jones of Nebraska; Tom and Patsy Jones of Nebraska; and Robert and Diane Jones of Renton; two grandchildren; a nephew and three nieces.

Susan Jane Ortmayer
No service was reported for Sequim resident Susan Jane Ortmayer, who died May 17, 2009, at the age of 86 of lung cancer.
She was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Carl Gottfried and Emily Kalvelage Ortmayer.
She married Gary Trent Chapman in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death in 1981.
She was an aviation machinists mate with the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, a United States Navy organization. She attended the University of Michigan for two years before World War II.
She was a mother of five and also worked as a clerk for a fabric store. She moved to Sequim in 2004 from the Milwaukee area. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and playing bridge and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Candis and Gary Trent Chapman Jr. of Friendship, Wis.; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and George Kondos of Plano, Texas; Barbara and Wiliam Radany of Murrietta, Calif.; Nancy and Jim Benson of
Sequim; and Mary and Samuel Millsapps of Acworth, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

H. David Longthorne
No services were reported for Sequim resident H. David Longthorne, who died May 6, 2009, at the age of 71.
He was born June 20, 1937, in Hollywood, Calif., and graduated from Alhambra High School in 1955, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
He served in the Navy from 1953-1955.
He attended Mount San Antonio Junior College and majored in business administration, graduating in 1957. He married Jo-Anne "Bunny" Lehr from Arcadia in 1958 and they had two sons. The couple lived in Arcadia from 1958-1976, until they moved to Lake Arrowhead, Calif.
Mr. Longthorne enjoyed boating, skiing, reading, traveling, outdoor recreation, and walking the family dog.
He worked in finance. He was a corporate controller and treasurer.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, brother and sister-in-law, three grandchildren; and a niece.
Margaret Mary Barrow
Private family services will be held for Port Angeles resident Margaret Mary Barrow, who died May 14, 2009, at the age of 89.
She was born July 25, 1919, in Port Angeles to Ralph Ernest Davis and May Luise (Brumfield) Davis.
