The Open Aire Market is a reflection of Sequim. Talented, interesting people have moved here from around the country and the world. About five dozen of them get together every Saturday to create the weekly community event that is the market.

This week you can dance to the spritely jigs and reels of Shades of Green, new to the market this season. The local band plays traditional Celtic music from 11 a.m.-

2 p.m. in the market square.

Summer vegetable season is in full swing, and the market provides a direct connection to local farmers and farm products.

New Leaf turns up

A New Leaf features multiple varieties of green beans, tomatoes, onions, summer squash and garlic this week. M&H Farm's offerings include early cooking apples and tomatoes. Nash's Organic Produce, through an arrangement with another certified organic grower in Eastern Washington, brings cantaloupe, melons and the first corn of the season. A full complement of produce, fish and seafood is available from market vendors.

The Cutting Garden, new to the market this season, features cut flower bouquets. Pacific Northwest Naturals provides a wide selection of native and unique perennials, sedums and herbs. The Family Farm brings bouquets, vegetables and hanging flower baskets.

Greyhound Pets, Inc. - a greyhound rescue and adoption group - is featured from 9 a.m.-noon in the community booths in market square.

Taste small town life

All day, a waste-reduction specialist from the city of Port Angeles will be available with information on composting and waste-reduction strategies.

Every product you see at the market was hand-crafted by the expert selling it, and you can take advantage of his or her knowledge. On any given Saturday you might see wood products and furniture; soap, bath and body products; clothing and fiber arts; fine art and photography; jewelry; even fine chocolates and delicious cheeses.

The Open Aire Market is a weekly taste of small-town life, a place to meet friends and neighbors and a community event. It's open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays on Cedar Street in downtown Sequim. See www.sequim market.com for more information.

Mark Ozias is executive director of the Sequim Open Aire Market. His column appears each week while the market is open.
