Members of the Olympic Theatre Arts are bringing their show home.

At the end of their $100,000 in 100 Days campaign, the theater group received $108,603.

"I'm humbled and very grateful that the community came together for this in such a difficult time," said OTA board member Elaine Caldwell.

She and her husband, Bob, longtime OTA volunteers, loaned the organization $100,000 two years ago but decided to forgive the loan up to its full amount if it would be matched by community donations.

"Words can hardly say enough regarding the ongoing commitment and generosity of Bob and Elaine Caldwell," said Brown Maloney, lead theater donor and Sequim Gazette owner.

"Over the years, they have given themselves to this project and now to the $100,000 matched."

Board treasurer Nicholas Pruznick said members and volunteers have remained optimistic through the building project.

"We've been working toward this for almost 30 years," he said.

"You have heard the saying 'let's get the show on the road,' well I say, 'let's get the show back home,'" Caldwell said.

Future for the OTA

The $208,603 leaves the building project needing about $175,000.

Caldwell said they have applied for and are waiting to hear about a First Federal Community Dividend Grant to pay the final costs.

"That will finish us off," she said.

The 160-plus seats theater is slated for a Feb. 5 grand opening with a production of "Cabaret."

"It'll be nice to wait till after the holidays because there's a lot going on," said Deborah Groesbeck, OTA board vice chairwoman.

"We want this to be special and a big deal."

Two productions are planned in the fall/winter for the facility's banquet hall, which seats about 109 people.

Board members said dinner theater is a possibility.

"Same Time Next Year," by Bernard Slade, will open in the building on Friday, Sept. 25, if city codes are approved in time; otherwise it will debut in a community venue.

Additional items such as a curtain for the stage are planned for later fundraising.

"There's a lot of things that are nice to have but not necessary to open up the doors right now," said board member Berta Warden.

Twelve Carpenters for Christ, including state Sen. Perry Lee from Mississippi, arrive today to finish the interior. Bob Stoltz, building committee chairman, has been a member of the Christian group for 14 years and arranged for the group to come.

OTA's annual Parking Lot Picnic, honoring members and volunteers, will take place from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in the theater's lot.

Engraved theater seats, stars and bricks still are available by calling 683-7326 or mailing to 414 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.
