Xyratex Technologies Inc. recently secured a patent with the U.S. Patent Office for an innovative "megasonic cascade scrubber" for high speed cleaning of disc media for hard drives.

The discs are cleaned in a continuous, inline process on both sides simultaneously by rotary brush scrubbing and sound energy to less than one-tenth of a micron.

Xyratex makes cleaning equipment for hard drive makers such as Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, Hitachi, LaCie, HP and Toshiba.

The demand for external data storage and cell phones, according to Xyratex representatives, continues to increase.
