The United Way of Clallam County annual fund drive is inching its way up to its $1 million goal. According to Jody Moss, United Way executive director, the total reached $792,000 as of Dec. 13. Last year the campaign raised $973,125. To date, Port Angeles has raised $136,244, Sequim is at $111,000, Forks has raised $49,000 and Clallam Bay/Sekiu and Neah Bay are at $1,330. Olympic Medical Center has raised $116,000. Last week the Outrageous Olympics raised $4,000.

"All the work of the many United Way campaign volunteers and loyal donors is making a difference," Moss said. "But, we've also heard bad news from some of our 27 partner agencies who are getting requests for help from more community members than ever before. And people who have never been unemployed are some of those seeking help. State and some local funds for health and human services have been severely reduced. And many fear it will get worse before it gets much better."

"We hope that community members who have been holding out on sending in their donations will remember to do so," said Gary Cohn, co-chairman of this year's campaign, along with his wife, Sue Cohn. "Many people in our community are struggling, just to get by. We know that this community is a community of givers and we believe that there are many people who will help support their friends and neighbors in need," said Sue Cohn. "Now is the time to remember to send in your United Way donation."

All donations received will be distributed throughout 2009. For information about making a donation to the United Way campaign, call 457-3011 or visit www.unitedwayclallam.org.
